Memorable student ceramics exhibition

27/04/2005

Selected work by second year BA (Hons) Ceramics students from UWIC (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) will be exhibited at Craft in the Bay, Cardiff Bay, from April 29 until May 16. The free exhibition, entitled Memory, is open to the public from 10:30am until 5:30pm daily.

"Family", by Keri Bowden (above).

Explaining the exhibition’s theme, Ceramics student Johan Wingestad, aged 23, from Brunskog, Sweden, said: “We could look at memories as static mirrored recordings from the outside world, but in reality they are bound to be under constant transformation, mixed up with beliefs, dreams and expectations.

“We have worked for three months, engaged in the most individual projects and processes. We have translated the set theme to fit our own interests and concerns and then represented these in the ceramic material, using the endless spectrum of possibilities for expression found with clay.

“A body of work has presented itself as a universal exhibition with work as diverse as DNA, gravestones, toy bunnies and strong grandfathers. There has been a constant movement backwards and forwards; thinking and making, forgetting and remembering.”

"Adornment", by Michelle Aked (above).

Delyth Done, BA (Hons) Ceramics programme director, added: “The Memory exhibition is full of vitality and is exciting and challenging. It demonstrates a wide, innovative and imaginative approach to clay-based art practice.

“This second year work is fresh and energetic and begins to redefine and extend current practice. This is the first exhibition of a new generation of ceramic artists.”
