It
is one conscious motion to look but it is another to really see.
My main inspiration is derived from my deep respect and passion
for the natural environment. I have always been fascinated and
drawn to the more intricate details such as a tiny growth within
a crevice of a rock. I became aware that a collective style was
appearing within my imagery and photographs, the entirety was not
important but a specific area or focal point became apparent within
each image. It is this notion that has been my inspiration and
my definitive language, which is carried in the work. I aim to
create a focal point within each piece that will draw in the viewer's
eye.
My process of creation is intense; I have developed a very active
and
physical making method that naturally allows spontaneity in surface
cracks and form. The pieces are energetic impulsive and intuitive.
I treasure the materials natural qualities and use the notion of
impact to experiment with different physical forces on the body of
clay. The materials reaction to different types of impact is interesting
and relates directly to the concept of spontaneity, leaving certain
elements of the work to chance. In order to intensify the impression
of the focal point I have developed a contrast within the surface
of the pieces. My work experiments with very particular deliberate
and conscious acts that interfere with the spontaneous surface. This
disparity has delivered a new aspect, the impressions or piercing
on the pieces carry man made connotations. It is not only a contrast
between spontaneous and deliberate acts but it is also a contrast
between two environments the rural and the urban. It portrays a sense
of disturbance an urban environment causes to the fragile beauty
of the rural setting but also displays the relationship whereby both
environments need one another to be fully appreciated. |
