The essence of all relationships is interaction. The need and
the reason to connect and to relate are numerous, diverse and complex,
but the desire appears intrinsic to our existence. We do not see
ourselves as isolates because we do not believe that we can exist
in isolation and we possess an inherent fear of being alone, of
being forgotten and overlooked. This expectation drives us to seek
and pursue connections with others, although we are aware by doing
so can leave us exposed and vulnerable as opposed to protected
and stronger. Relationships can appear ambiguous when viewed objectively;
they can appear mutual and reciprocal or one-sided and selfish.
The body of work is a result of an investigation using the medium
of clay through the process of the wheel. Thrown forms have been
chosen that are loaded with associated potential and implied symbolism
then placed in positions to suggest an element of tension within
the relationship. Their position, therefore, and their physical relatedness
invite a dialogue into their meaning and their existence. These are
forms that emanate, through the presence of their physicality and
spatial proximity, the phenomena of interrelations. For a relationship
to occur there has to exist an energy between forms that has the
power to activate the space between and around the forms, although
it may arise from a personal action, to some degree we are all affected
by the result. These interactions become a catalyst, which offers
the viewer an opportunity to explore and analyse their meanings and
interactions through their own personal experiences and perceptions.
The relationships executed and the narratives imbued present themselves
as a book awaiting conclusion, to be completed by the viewer.
