Living in a coastal location has provided me with constant inspiration. The coastline is continuously undergoing transformation through the erosion process and it is this visual element of decay that has instigated this year's work. The power of the sea and the elements of nature are all combined to wear away at the land. Despite our battle with the coastline and our best efforts to delay this process we remain defeated.
The surface qualities found in sea defences, the promenade and ultimately the harbour wall have intrigued me for some time. I wanted the surface of my pieces to be matt, concrete like, and I found coloured clays were ideal. A dry surface decoration had very little texture within the clay itself. Thus, allowing me to experiment with combustible materials. I produced a wide range of coloured clays using oxides as the colourants. Producing this broad colour palette in neutral tones has provided me with a wide spectrum of colours all evident in nature. I partially glazed areas introducing mans inevitable struggle with defence against the elements.
Despite being a thrower the layering and erosive techniques I wanted to apply to my work introduced me to moulds. Beginning with this former then allowed me to concentrate on surface qualities of layering and integrating combustibles within the form. The form has derived from many elements evident along the coastline, such as port holes and drainage overflows that are frequently seen but rarely appreciated. |
