A Million Marching feet
"If we could raise up the dead and they march down your street you would probably hear the tread of a million marching feet"
A neurin Owen, Local South Wales Miner.
The direction and focus my work has taken is based on, my passion for the historical, industrial mining past of South Wales. Together with, influences of my geological environment.
My aim is to produce a unique individual series of hand made, slab built layer's depicting the erosion of the mining tools. Each layer affects the next layer echoing the sandstone rock of the local mountains and the storing of these redundant tools in the "Big Pit Museum" - this is also depicting the current situation of the mining industry of today.
The process developed through great experimentation intensely pushing the boundaries of what clay can achieve. The surface was, rolled-out under pressure of bone-dry clay additions, which tore and broke the surface, followed by heat applied to direct the cracking therefore reflecting erosion. The combination and blends of different clay's, along side the coloured oxides and glazes applied in a painterly fashion, have generated an internal tension and narrative. |
