Sophie SteenMy work is based on looking at the way clay can be used as a canvas and experimenting with different surface qualities and application techniques. Particularly exploring the ways in which I can achieve the depth of colour and line quality that I produce in my 2D work.

My chosen subject matter is plants and flowers, and it is from nature that I get most of my inspiration. I find the splashes of vibrant colours, flowing lines and variety of shapes fascinating and I am particularly interested in magnifying and abstracting sections and groups of flowers. I like to work quickly and freely giving my work a sense of spontaneity. I like my glazes and slips to overlap and run together to create a rich illusion of depth. The designs are built up slowly, a new layer added at each stage. As raw liquid glazes look mostly the same I have to constantly retain a mental image of what I'm doing and the colours that will develop.

Moving from smaller tiles to creating larger panels to work on has been a natural progression for me, as I have always had the desire to work on a larger scale; however it has been one that has thrown up numerous problems such as cracking and limitations such as kiln size and weight.

My final panels have been designed to be visually pleasing, dramatic wall pieces intended for modern interiors. I am very excited about the future, I believe strongly in my idea and the potential to develop it further. Looking especially, at varying the panel shape and size, adding texture and purposely designing for specific interiors. I also intend to look into the different possibilities of obtaining the panels pre made, so I can concentrate mainly on the surface decoration.
