Steve BourkeThe universe is forever expanding, our worlds are forever evolving, from something old comes something new!

My work encapsulates the cycle of life, the struggle and enjoyment of human existence. The soft and gentle finger marks left in the clay as a forever expanding spiral indicates my personal perceptions of life as a forever changing cosmos. The hand-building process allows me to create a three dimensional form from a two-dimensional thrown disc. The vessels are constructed from a number of discs, which are cut and re-moulded into the evolving shapes.

The early stages of my work derive from my love of medieval pottery. The simple form and style along with the energy of the functional jugs and wares has a significant influence on the work presented.

I am interested in the process of making rather than just the finished product. I drew inspiration from the work of Clive Bowen, Phil Rogers, Warren MacKenzie, Walter Keeler, Peter Voulkos and Betty Woodman, identifying in these ceramic artists a respect for ceramic tradition as well as aspiration to expand the creative boundaries of process.

My work can be seen to be balanced between functional and precious and it is up to the beholder to decide.
