Susan RimmerI am primarily concerned with the ethereal qualities present in the human mind using my understanding of them to convey a sense of fragility of thought as well as substance of memory.

Thoughts enter minds without bidding and appear tangible but to grasp them physically is beyond the capability of human beings. Some memories need to be released, others unravel themselves into a misty, gossamer like network, remaining with us and always accessible.

My aim is to demonstrate capturing these phenomena and entrapping them with the intent of extracting that which on reflection appears significant and releasing the remainder.

Vessels are the catalyst I have chosen to use to demonstrate the intangible in visual form, to this end I have explored the versatility of different acrylic yarns, natural wool and latterly, silk thread, first knitting then unravelling them leaving the provenance of myself within their substance.

I have developed my work through making plaster moulds and using them to form the shapes of bowls and as my thoughts moved on bottles. Next I drizzle into the moulds the unravelled yarn steeped in casting slip, removing them when they have taken a set, drying and firing to 1240c.ox. Latterly I have used porcelain slip as its translucency holds a more delicate yet stronger stance.

These are then arranged in a series of still life groupings, demonstrating my intent to release the mind of the onlooker from recognising the vessels purely as containers, and suggesting that they perceive them as a metaphor for thought and memory.
