ALISON BEARDCelebrating the Alchemy of Glaze
'A liquid substance becomes solid. This is the simplest way of describing the first and oldest formation principle of minerals '
Michael Gienger

I am interested by the mysterious phenomenon in which the earth conjoins positive and negative forces to create mineral forming elements. In particular, the ways in which these elements are processed their combining, melting, and fusing together, creating a molten mass which solidifies into glass-like forms. I experimented with this method to form my own glaze pieces

I chose to focus on the crystal structure, as inspiration for my final forms, in particular, the arc, using this as the vehicle in which to explore my glazes. I elected to keep the form and colours of my pieces uniform, to eliminate any distraction from the qualities of the glazes.

This period of research has allowed me to evaluate how the different components behave, changing the variants of the composition, and tested how the different aspects affect the overall results. I want to explore the physical presence, surfaces and inner qualities of these combined elements, and intend, through my pieces, to reveal the delicate interiors, organic and sheer surfaces and exterior qualities.

My pieces are created purely of glaze by combining materials together and entrusting them to the kiln, which like the earth's core is an area of intrigue and mystery. I have based my work on the same principles as that of geological forming, through heating and chemical change. My aim is to challenge the assumptions made of glazes; stretching it to new limits. I hope to visually challenge and stimulate the viewer, prompting a sensual and tactile response.

I have been inspired by the work of Jasmine Scheidler, Roy Maayan and Craig Hurley and admire the way in which these ceramicists have taken glaze formulas, questioning the traditional limits placed on them and pushing them to new potentials.
