A Tactile Memory
Where ever I go I try to bring back something that I have come into contact with, be it leaves that have swirled around my feet or seaweed washed up on my favourite beach. This collected material I keep, making the mundane special. The everyday which is taken for granted is turned into an integral part of my pieces, the material is used within my saggar firings, its very essence seeping into them.
Initially my inspiration came from Cairns, carrying a pebble from the start of my journey and together reaching the summit. The union of man and nature.
The beach for me in particular, is a place to be at one with nature, I go there for inspiration. Here is a place to think, to clear my mind of the clutter of everyday life, every sense touched.
The pebbles that I cast have been moulded by the sea, softened in their journey, caressed by the power of the sea, made smooth for a tactile sensation. My pieces are meant to be handled, treasured, held intimate to the holder. |
