MADELEINE BOX

MADELEINE BOXThis body of work was inspired by a story that I was read as a child. I was read many of Roald Dahl's books but this one in particular stood out in my memory. The 'Magic Finger' in short is about a family who liked to shoot ducks, this made the little girl who lived next door angry and so she turned them into ducks with her magic finger! I found that children's stories were a way for me to explore typed text, image and surface qualities in clay.

We are taught about right and wrong through the use of stories from an early age and are told about the bad things that happen to the boy who cried wolf. Although this sounds ridiculous to us as adults it teaches children from an early age about right and wrong.

The Magic Finger has many messages. My work explores these messages and invite the viewer to unravel the narratives. I do this by presenting a series of boxes in a linear format, which can be read like the pages or chapters in the book from left to right or right to left. By picking out the different imagery I have created my own narrative and thus turned the story into the memory that I have of it.

Layering, texturing and mark making in clay were all process that helped me explore these concepts and I did this by using a variety of slips, transfers and print making techniques.
