RACHEL BURFORD

RACHEL BURFORDThe main focus of my work is to create a range of organic dishes that are visually decorative and colourful. I want to capture the viewer through the layers of energetic and spontaneous surfaces and to evoke feelings of beauty and happiness. I am fascinated by the bright colours and soft flowing shapes of the lilly petals, and wanted to demonstrate this through my functional dishes.

The dishes are made from press moulded terracotta clay, decorated with majolica to achieve a vibrant colour palette. I like to work quickly when decorating my dishes as this allows me to capture the flowing lines of the flower and also give my organic dishes a sense of depth and movement from the energetic layers of surface techniques. These include splashing, sgraffito, wax resist, enamel mono-printing and mother of pearl luster. It is important to me that the form of the dish emulates the flower and the edges are soft and organic, giving the sense of fluidity, like the flower.

My work is very much influenced by the use of colour and surface qualities of the majolica glaze from a range of artists, such as Linda Arbuckle, Daphne Carnegy and the surface layers of Lisa Katzenstein. I have also been influenced by the soft colours and large paintings of Georgia O'Keefe.
