BEVERLEY BURLEY

BEVERLEY BURLEYMy work focuses primarily on current affairs resourced from the British media. This project is a personal response to the complex social and political issues and events which surround our daily lives. I aim to question our ability to distinguish between the mundane harsh sincerity of modern life, from the hyped, orthodox perspective of TV politicized news and vicarious newspaper reports.

Since 2001 there has been increased coverage on global politics and more importantly devastation. In March 2003 Britain officially went to war with Iraq. As a British civilian my only encounter with this war has been witnessed through the 'eye' of the almighty mass media. From my location the war is at a safe distance, presented in a neat consumerist package of the newspaper, TV or computer screen.

In conclusion, we are beginning to become unconscious of human tragedy. Devastation is in our domestic environment merging into the sanitized background of our lives. Intrigued by ceramicists' Stephen Dixon, Paul Scott and Andy Shaw, I explored a variety of techniques to convey my information. Ceramic Commemorative ware has often exploited social and political events throughout history. Inspired by commemorative English and Dutch delftware, my plates appear to honour their subjects. However this stereotype is incorrect, their heroic behaviour questionable! Behind each character is the stark reminder of the tragic circumstances they endured and perished in.
