My work illustrates the force of the collective consciousness of crowds. This overwhelming power consumes any specific agenda the crowd may have, giving individuals a certain anonymity. Through an accentuated perspective, the viewer too becomes drawn into this collective, stimulating both a sense of voyeurism and inclusion in the scene.

The forms I make are a midway point between two and three dimensions, using trompe l'oeil techniques and taking influence from stage set models with milti-layered imagery. Colourful slips cover the surface of each piece animating the characters to create a vibrant scene. I am interested in the blatancy of the brush marks not only in giving insight into process but conveying an energy and movement. I also play with scale and colour intensity to focus on key areas to narrate the scene.

Artists who influence the way I work in my practice are Akio Takemori with the mesmerizing expressions captured through the brush strokes on his cylindrical figures, and the bold colours and stylistic nature of Jitka Palmers pots. I also take influence from the surrealist and expressionist movements and such fine art painters as Bosch and Breugal who paint fantastical figures in lively scenes. I also enjoy crowd paintings by Renoir that encourage you to engage with the subjects as though sat amongst them.
