I create vessels which explore the notion of energy. The power of water erosion, waterfalls, beaches inspired the initial ideas for this body of work.
My vessels have the power as containers to envelope and consolidate the energy which they epitomize. The energy is produced, as a result of the force involved in the making process.
This is achieved as a direct result of the force imposed upon the clay body in pulling a twisted wire through it. The two resulting slabs are cast in plaster, one side being the reverse of the other, thus freezing that moment of energy. These slabs then form either side of a mould. On completing the process through slip casting the latent energy is once again released. The smooth side panels are in direct contrast to the energetic mark making on the main surface area, furthering the feeling of containment.
I wish my monochromatic vessels to evoke a feeling of excited tension between viewer and subject, as they interact with the forms.
I have been inspired by the movement and energy in the work of the following artists: Jenny Beavan, Takeshi Yasuda, Bridget Riley and Jackson Pollock.
'The modern artist is working and expressing an inner world. In other words, expressing energy, motion and inner forces'.
