I am inviting the viewer of my work to look at the activity of mankind as parasitic. In the search of growth the human race underestimates the scale of our mutation of the earth's surface. In the future we may only see the effects of nature exclusively in the ruins of human habitat. As parasites it is not in our nature to care about our host.
Scale and multiples of familiar symbols set the parameters of my system of working. I create these three dimensional symbols through slip casting and present them in patterns that recur in a clockwise formation that attempts to create the passage of time. These are displayed on plinths that form grids and patterns.
I am inspired by city planning scale models, maps and the work of numerous artists, some using ceramics, such as Jeff Koons, Richard Slee, Grayson Perry, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Marielle Nuedecker. Moving to the city after living in rural North Wales was the initial drive to tackle this subject matter. |
