SARA MORGANThe Ocean and what lies beneath has always fascinated me, for as long as I can remember. I've always had an attraction to sea life, more recently the world's coral reefs and the surrounding life that inhabits these areas.

The inspiration I have for these creatures is their bright colours that give the impression of jewels in the water which you would like to hold, yet at the same time they are actually sharp, with spikes as a form of protection. After visiting South Africa in December, I have had first hand experience of the nature of these sea urchins. This experience has stimulated my artwork and myself, also the journey I undertook whilst diving into their habitat. Whereby I had to literally search for the urchins and sponges, than have them right in front of you, this still amazes me to this day.

Within my practical work I want to invoke emotions, energy and impact that these sea creatures have on mankind. The wonders of the reefs and how fragile it all is, yet strong and the sense of survival. To create a balance between soft, fragile and sharp, protection. Also to portray the sense of movement which is created by the oceans currents.

The transformation a piece of ceramic undertakes, from being soft malleable clay into a crafted stone-life coloured jewel, yet still representing the soft jelly like forms we see. I wish to translate this through my work.

The surface qualities upon these forms depend on the application of textures, using a repetitive rhythmic action. With the careful placing of the spikes, to achieve the scene of them flowing with the sea current. I wish to highlight these textures by using a broad range of barium glazes, which highlight the more fragile areas.

Overall I'm interested in celebrating the life that surrounds, and is part of the reefs. I'm inviting the viewer to experience what I felt whilst diving in this strange yet wonderful environment, without evasive measures.
