CLAIRE SCAWNThis body of work considers the notion of intimacy, intimacy can be read on several levels, as something we feel, a moment in time, something we think, hold, touch or see it is personal to us and we can decide what we wish to reveal or conceal from others.

I am intrigued by the intimate relationship that we have with objects and how we interact with them, I explore this through jewellery as it is worn as an intimate part of the body, outwardly expressing who we are inwardly. The relationship between jewellery and ceramics is for me a continuous process constantly revealing possibilities and fueling my ongoing creative practice.

I describe these notions by placing together a series of parts each one interacting with the other. The palm of the hand is a very intimate area of the body. The hand cast is taken from the cup of my hand and forms the centre of this work. It is placed within a box which reveals only a small, intimate area and conceals, allowing possibility of it being hidden altogether. The pins significance, rests with the notion of the hands re-attachment to the body. These objects are presented conceptually, within a specific location which becomes the stage; the stage is so called because my work reflects very human interaction, life itself being a sort of stage.

The presentation of the hand and the pin may appear very controlled and arranged upon the stage but this allows space within which the viewer can find their own sense of humanity, their own sense of intimacy. It is a very personal journey. With intention of these feelings being returned to their point of origin.

A further series of work has been explored using the same pieces but looking at the figurative elements of casting the cup of my hand in direct relation to the body itself. I have presented them in a series of three, each one treated slightly differently to represent possible emotions which are exhumed through the palm. The first is fully glazed giving it a "wet" quality, the second is very lightly glazed which is reminiscent of "sweat" and the third is dry but glazed underneath revealing or perhaps concealing "hidden" emotions.

All the work is porcelain and each piece is fired to a different temperature to best describe subtle differences and qualities within the material. The stage and box have very absorbent qualities allowing them to blend together, almost resting in the background and the hand casts are fired to allow the true qualities of porcelain to shine through, as they are quite transparent.
