The main influences on my work have been taken from looking at sea life, in particular corals and sea anemones, it is the fragility, movement, quirkiness and preciousness of these creatures that first drew me to them and I want these ideas to be portrayed in my work.
From analysing the images and source material that I have collected, it has become clear that pattern, repetition and symmetry are underlying objectives in my work, my practise is very process led, with the same process being constantly repeated over and over either to create surface patterns to which forms are created from or by using tiny individual sections to build up a surface or structure.
My aim is to produce a series of four groups, with each group being made up of a family of pieces. Each piece will relate to the other through patterns and textures, which are imbedded in the way, they are made.
I like the idea of capturing a moment in time, a living object becoming static through its death, presenting my work in a way so that it looks like it had been caught or trapped for analytical purposes, the way in which butterflies or moths are pinned in glass fronted boxes.
Preciousness, purity and fragility are themes which will be explored through the glazes and clay body that I use, a hint of colour will help reinforce these themes within my work. |
