The work showing here was instigated as result of
this maker's fascination with the concrete bunkers and fortifications
that were constructed along the Atlantic coast of Europe by the
Germans forces during World War Two.
Jersey in the Channel Isles, this maker's home, contains many examples
of these fascinating structures. Recently, he became more aware
of these concrete forms as interesting, early examples of a type
of architectural Art Brut and further began to look upon them as
sculptural work, with an intriguing military architectural aesthetic
quintessentially of the twentieth century, which could provide an
ideal opportunity for exploration within the medium of ceramic.
Time, weathering and destruction has also added to the aesthetic
impact of these bunkers, further rendering them into ruins that
can evoke a sense of awe and paradoxically, be at the same time
a source of visual intrigue and excitement. Those perceptions this
maker, has attempted to convey through his work.
