These pheasants form a collection that investigates
the British publics obsession with the exotic. Though the
collection I hope to create a group narrative by utilising the format
of Staffordshire mantelpiece ware. I feel that the role of the mantelpiece
conveys a strong reference to mundane or domestic issues. Substitution
is the main thread that runs throughout this body of work. By referencing
the history of British industrial ceramics and its improvisation
of high art, I hope to draw parallels with the British seaside town's
obsession with the exotic and attempt to portray itself as something
that is more appealing than it really is.
Staffordshire ware was traditionally won at fairs and the subject
matters would be related to popular tastes, such as exotic animals,
and celebrities of the time. The narrative is carried by these amusement
prizes because they depict the unobtainable and their inaccuracies
would go unquestioned. I believe that this is something that is
inherent throughout British culture.
